A 42-year-old Cork man has been sentenced to 11 months in prison after deceiving three elderly residents by taking cash for home repairs that were never performed.
Jerry O’Sullivan, of 7 Hazelwood Grove, Kinsale Road, Cork, received consecutive sentences on Thursday after pleading guilty to the deception of an 88-year-old woman, a 90-year-old man, and a third elderly person whose age was not disclosed.
Court Reaction to Elderly Victim Deception
Judge Mary Dorgan stated that the court was “quite taken aback” by the evidence presented during the proceedings. The judge noted she was “very impressed” by the victim impact statements provided by those targeted.
One victim, an 88-year-old woman from Douglas, testified that O’Sullivan took €350 from her on March 28, 2026, before leaving without completing any work. She stated he returned a few days later to attempt to coax more money from her.
“Since the day this man arrived, I have been locking the doors all the time and I am afraid to answer the door,” she said, adding that the incident has left her “shaking all the time.”
A 90-year-old man, also targeted at his home in Douglas on February 21, 2026, reported being tricked into giving O’Sullivan €100. He expressed that he had been “way too trusting” and stated he would now need to install more CCTV.
Addiction and Sentencing Conditions
Defense solicitor Shane Collins-Daly informed the court that O’Sullivan struggled with a serious addiction to cocaine and alcohol, stating the offences were committed to fund these addictions.
In the event of an appeal, the court set recognisances including a €750 bond, with €500 to be lodged in cash. O’Sullivan is required to abstain from intoxicants and offending.
Further conditions mandate that he must sign on twice daily at Togher Garda Station and remain out of the Grange, Turner’s Cross, and Douglas areas.
