Head coach Richard Fousek called two timeouts early in the opening period in an attempt to stabilize the team, but the German side maintained control, leading 35-13 by halftime.

Despite the lopsided start, the Czech team showed improvement in the final three quarters. Linda Kotrčová led the Czech scoring effort with 10 points, while German player Mia Wiegand tallied 23 points for her side. Reflecting on the performance, Fousek noted that while the first quarter proved decisive, the team managed to play on more even terms for the remainder of the game.

Tournament Struggles and Shooting Woes

Throughout the championship, the Czech team faced significant challenges with shooting accuracy. In their final match against Germany, the team converted only one of their 16 three-point attempts and struggled with two-point field goal percentage, hitting just 22 percent.

Across their seven matches, the Czech Republic recorded six losses, falling to Slovenia (55-63), Colombia (46-52), Japan (49-69), Canada (40-67), Latvia (59-72), and Germany. Their only victory came against Mexico. The team finished 14th in the 16-nation field, placing ahead of only Mexico and Ivory Coast. These results mirrored the team’s performance at the previous year’s European Championship, where they finished 13th and narrowly avoided relegation from the elite group.

The Only Victory: A Hard-Fought Win Over Mexico

The highlight of the tournament for the Czech squad was their 74-66 victory over Mexico. Dominika Pencáková served as the team’s central anchor in that match, scoring 24 points, with 18 of those coming in the first half. The game saw the Czechs finally find success from beyond the perimeter, hitting four of their first six three-point attempts.

Although the team led by as many as 19 points at halftime, the match became tense in the final minutes as Mexico narrowed the lead to four points. A critical two-point basket by Ema Nováková, who finished with 11 points, combined with further contributions from Pencáková, ultimately secured the win for the hosts.

Context of the Campaign

The tournament was marked by venue adjustments, including shifts to the smaller hall within the Starez Arena Vodova complex when the main arena hosted concurrent knockout-stage matches. The team’s difficulty in adjusting to these environments was noted during their match against Latvia, where the Czechs suffered a 59-72 loss. In that game, Tereza Sýkorová, the only player in the Czech squad currently playing abroad in Würzburg, Germany, led the team with nine points.

Coach Fousek expressed that his primary goal for the final match was to provide a spirited performance for the supporters, parents, and players. It is good that we picked ourselves up afterward and the remaining three quarters were balanced, Fousek said of the team’s resilience following the difficult start against Germany.
