Anesthesiologist Dr. Michael Ashnin was named Lompoc Valley Medical Center Physician of the Year for 2025 during a ceremony Wednesday evening.

Dr. Ashnin Honored as Physician of the Year

Ashnin, who has been with LVMC since 2000, joked that it “only took 25 years” to receive the hospital’s highest honor, adding, “This award means a lot to me.” Employees cast votes for the physician they believe best exemplifies the hospital district’s values, maintains community trust, and continuously strives to improve services while working as a team member.

The award was presented during the annual medical staff holiday gathering at the Mission Club. Ashnin expressed his gratitude, stating, “I appreciate it. I love my hospital. I love everybody I work with. You’re just — my family.”

Ashnin’s background is deeply rooted in nursing; he began his career as a nurse, is the son of a nurse, the widower of a nurse, and the father of nurses, with many other family members in the profession. He acknowledged the nobility of the nursing profession, thanking the nurses he works with.

He earned his medical degree from Rigas Stradina Universitate Medicinas Fakultate in Latvia, completed his residency at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, and his internship in internal medicine at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh.

LVMC Board President Leslie Kelly, RN, read numerous employee comments praising Ashnin’s character and dedication. Many comments highlighted his friendly nature, professionalism, positivity, and compassion.

One nomination stated, “Dr. Ashnin never skimps on patient care and attention to detail…He takes time to listen to their needs…and always has their best interest in mind.” Staff also noted his supportiveness and nurturing attitude.

Colleagues in the perioperative department praised his willingness to educate and answer questions, even using light-hearted quizzes to reinforce learning. His generosity and personal care for staff were also frequently mentioned.

“He approaches every interaction with kindness and professionalism and is always willing to go the extra mile,” one nomination read. Another employee stated they felt “safe for my patients and for me as a professional working with him.”

LVMC Chief Executive Officer Yvette Cope emphasized the importance of the medical staff’s dedication and impact on the community. She stated that while accomplishments across the district are valuable, “the real value is all of you.”

Cope added, “You are the people our community turns to in difficult moments…Your skill, your compassion and your commitment bring our mission to life every single day.” She expressed optimism for 2026, attributing it to the strength of the medical staff.

The Lompoc Valley Community Healthcare Organization (LVCHO) sponsored the annual award, recognizing and promoting high-quality treatment services in Lompoc.
