A woman with a zero alcohol license allegedly recorded a breath alcohol level more than five times the legal limit after reports of erratic driving near Hamilton on Sunday.
Erratic Driving Prompts Police Investigation
Police received multiple reports around 4:50 p.m. on Sunday regarding a vehicle being driven erratically on the Waikato Expressway, according to Senior Sergeant Chris Painter.
Officers intercepted the vehicle near Puketaha and conducted a breath test on the driver. The test revealed a breath alcohol level exceeding five times the legal limit.
“The driver was more than five times over the legal limit, however she was also on a zero alcohol licence, meaning she had been forbidden to consume any alcohol before getting behind the wheel,” Painter said.
Painter described the incident as a “shocking example” of poor judgement and a risk to public safety. Reports indicated the vehicle was swerving across the center line and into oncoming traffic.
“The driver is extremely lucky not to have injured or killed someone. We’re grateful to those people who stopped to call 111 and report this to us,” Painter stated. “We encourage anyone who sees dangerous driving like this to please, let us know as soon as possible – it truly does save lives.”
The woman’s vehicle was impounded, and she has been summonsed to appear before the Hamilton District Court on February 26, facing charges including excess breath alcohol and breaching licence conditions.
