The Philippines is observing National Autism Consciousness Week, with government agencies and lawmakers emphasizing the need for increased support and resources for individuals with autism and their families.
National Autism Consciousness Week Underway
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has enjoined Filipinos to support National Autism Consciousness Week, which runs from January 27 to February 2, 2024. The observance aims to promote understanding, acceptance, and inclusion of persons with autism.
Several legislators are pushing for measures to provide greater assistance. Representative Benitez is advocating for a bill to provide support for individuals with autism, while another solon is seeking a stipend and free therapy under a proposed National Autism Program.
Inclusive learning is also being championed as a key component of ensuring the right to education for all learners, including those with autism.
Advocates are also focusing on supporting parents of children with autism. Initiatives aim to provide resources and a community for “ausome” parents navigating the challenges and joys of raising children on the spectrum.
