Legal Resolution of Prior Matrimonial Dispute

This new chapter arrives just three months after the Supreme Court agreed to grant Omar Abdullah a divorce from his estranged wife, Payal Abdullah, on July 31, 2026. Both parties informed the apex court that they had mutually agreed to end their relationship, settle all pending disputes, and withdraw all cases filed against each other.

The case reached the highest court after Omar Abdullah challenged a Delhi High Court decision. That December 12, 2023 judgment had disputed his claim that Payal Nath had deserted him and that such actions constituted mental cruelty for obtaining a divorce. The Delhi High Court had previously upheld an August 2016 trial court ruling that found his allegations of cruelty to be vague, while accepting the defense that Payal Nath remained in Delhi due to security concerns in Kashmir and the schooling of their two sons, Zahir and Zamir.

During the final Supreme Court proceedings, senior advocate Kapil Sibal appeared for the couple to inform the justices that an amicable settlement had been reached. The pair had originally married in September 1994 after meeting while working at The Oberoi hotel in Delhi. They lived separately starting in 2009, with Omar Abdullah announcing the separation publicly in 2011 before pursuing formal dissolution through the legal system.
