Brown University Shooting Injures Durham Academy Graduate

Kendall Turner, a member of Durham Academy’s class of 2025, was injured in the shooting, Head of School Michael Ulku-Steiner said in an email to the DA community. Turner underwent surgery and is currently in critical but stable condition.

Her parents arrived in Providence Saturday night, according to the email. An unnamed person of interest was apprehended by police early Sunday morning.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley stated that one person has been discharged, and seven others are in stable condition.

Ulku-Steiner noted that seven other Durham Academy alumni currently enrolled at Brown University are safe and uninjured.

Turner attended Durham Academy from pre-kindergarten until the beginning of her junior year when she transferred to the North Carolina School of Science and Math. She returned to DA to finish her junior and senior years, graduating in May 2025.

The school is collecting information on how to support the Turner family and will share details with the community as they become available. Ulku-Steiner asked the community to send “prayers, love and strength” to Kendall, her sister Kennedy (class of 2023), and their parents.
