East Coast Polls Open in Pivotal US Midterm Elections

Polls opened across the US east coast on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, as American voters delivered their verdict on Donald Trump’s second term in high-stakes midterm elections. Democrats entered the day hoping to wrest control of Congress from the Republican Party and impose the first significant legislative checks on the administration. All 435 House seats and 35 of the 100 Senate seats are up for grabs, alongside governorships in 36 states. To seize both chambers away from the Republicans, the party needs a net gain of just four seats in the Senate alongside only three pickups in the House.

Voters Face Record Diesel Prices and Rising Inflation

Voter frustration centers heavily on the cost of living and foreign entanglements. The price of a gallon of diesel hit a record high of $6.52 in September following the war against Iran, which started in February, up from $3.75. Meanwhile, inflation has ticked up from 3% when Trump took office to 3.7% today, a figure economists estimate would have been lower without his sweeping regime of global tariffs. Based on the RealClearPolitics.com average, The Irish Times simultaneously pointed out that Donald Trump held a 39 per cent approval rating right before the midterms, down from 50 per cent when he assumed office in January 2025. In a final campaign appearance near the Washington National Mall on Monday, the president focused largely on his plans to remake the capital and renovate the Reflecting Pool rather than economic pressures.
This is the last day before the midterm elections, the most important midterm I believe in our lifetime, he told the crowd.

Democrats Plan Investigations If Control Shifts in Congress

A shift in congressional control would dramatically alter the final two years of the presidential term. Securing the House would empower Democrats to initiate administration inquiries, subpoena records and witness testimony, and place top officials under rigorous congressional oversight. House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries stated that Democrats have ruled nothing out regarding impeachment. Democratic lawmakers have already lined up priority targets, including Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House oversight committee, prioritizing inquiries into the Trump family corruption and Jamie Raskin requesting information on the business dealings of Donald Trump Jr. and Jared Kushner. On defense oversight, Colorado congressman Jason Crow plans to target the Pentagon, citing reports of defense money steered toward companies linked to the Trump family.

Disputed Results and Legal Battles Over Voting Integrity

As voting commenced, concerns mounted over whether the Republicans will accept the final outcome. Donald Trump, who tried to overturn his 2020 election defeat, has repeatedly alleged widespread voter fraud and accused Democrats of cheating. Despite the turbulence, more than 57 million Americans had already voted early before today, reflecting high energy ahead of Tuesday’s final tallies.
