The ECB confirmed the fixture list for the 2027 men’s Ashes on Thursday, revealing a lineup that bypasses traditional northern cricket strongholds. The series will open at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on June 18, with the first Test running until June 22. This marks the first time since 2015 that Trent Bridge has hosted an Ashes Test; England has won its previous three Ashes Tests at the venue, including a famous innings and 78-run win in 2015 where Australia was bowled out for 60 in the first session. Following the opener, the series will move to Lord’s—traditionally hosting the second Test starting June 30—followed by Edgbaston and the Utilita Bowl near Southampton. The Utilita Bowl will stage its first men’s Ashes Test beginning July 21, becoming the 10th ground in the United Kingdom to do so. The series concludes at the Kia Oval, running through to August 2.

The exclusion of Headingley in Leeds and Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester has drawn criticism, including from Andy Burnham, the British Prime Minister, when the decision was first announced in 2023. Both northern venues have deep historical ties to the Ashes. Headingley staged Don Bradman’s two triple centuries in the 1930s, remarkable individual feats by Ian Botham in 1981, and Ben Stokes’s unbeaten century during a one-wicket win in 2019.

Concurrent Women’s Ashes and Venue Shifts

While the men’s series avoids the north, the women’s Ashes will begin in Leeds. The multi-format Metro Bank Women’s Ashes kicks off with a Test at Headingley starting June 24, the first time the ground has hosted a women’s Ashes Test since 2001. The women’s rivalry will step up another level in the three-match Vitality IT20 series, which begins at Trent Bridge on Saturday, July 3, before moving to the Kia Oval and Emirates Old Trafford. The women’s Metro Bank ODI series will be played at the Utilita Bowl and Lord’s before finishing at Edgbaston on Tuesday, July 20. This follows the format of the 2023 joint-hosting, where both series were tied, and Australia retained the trophy.

Preparation and International Fixtures

To improve preparations for the marquee series, the ECB and Cricket Australia have coordinated a warm-up match between a strong England Lions side and Australia at Emirates Old Trafford from June 7 to 10. This fixture is subject to review should Australia reach the ICC World Test Championship Final. The move comes after England’s 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia was linked to inadequate warm-up time.

The 2027 summer calendar includes a packed slate of international action. The England men’s international summer begins with five ODIs against Pakistan between May 15 and May 26. These matches are likely to see England missing some star names due to a potential clash with the IPL, which is scheduled between March 14 and May 30. Following the Pakistan series, England will host Bangladesh for a one-off Test at Lord’s from May 28 to June 1. The summer concludes in September with a white-ball series against New Zealand, featuring three T20s and five ODIs held across Durham, Old Trafford, Cardiff, Edgbaston, Lord’s, Bristol, and Trent Bridge.

Additionally, the ECB announced that the England Men’s Mixed Disability team will host Australia during the summer, and the ECB confirmed that the England Men’s and Women’s teams will be going all out to regain the Ashes.
