New Delhi – Disclosures to the Election Commission reveal a significant disparity in the financial holdings of India’s major political parties, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reporting a bank balance exceeding Rs 6,900 crore, while the Indian National Congress holds just Rs 53 crore.
BJP’s Financial Standing
The BJP, currently in power at the central government and in Delhi, possesses a bank balance of over Rs 6,900 crore, according to filings made after the Delhi assembly elections earlier this year.
Financial Status of Other Parties
In comparison, the Congress party’s combined bank balance at its headquarters, state, and district units totals a mere Rs 53 crore. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), despite limited electoral success, maintains deposits of over Rs 580 crore. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) central party had bank balances of Rs 9.9 crore, CPM Rs 4 crore, CPI Rs 41 lakh, and BSP Rs 580 crore.
Congress declared receiving Rs 517 crore in 2024-25 through donations exceeding Rs 20,000, which are required to be disclosed. Political parties do not disclose donations below this threshold, with a substantial portion of funding coming from smaller contributions.
Funding sources for political parties include individuals, corporations, and trusts. No contribution reports have been received by the Election Commission following the Bihar assembly elections.
