Indonesia’s Environment Ministry has summoned eight major companies in North Sumatra for questioning regarding their environmental management practices, which are suspected of contributing to recent flooding and landslides in the region.
Company Practices Under Scrutiny
Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq confirmed the move is intended to gather direct explanations from company management about operational activities potentially linked to the disasters and to ensure full compliance with environmental obligations.
Nurofiq emphasized the ministry’s commitment to holding businesses accountable for disregarding sustainability and public safety. He stated the summons is not simply for clarification, but a comprehensive effort to review environmental permits and verify compliance.
The companies summoned include PT Agincourt Resources, PT Toba Pulp Lestari, Sarulla Operations Ltd, PT Sumatera Pembangkit Mandiri, PT Teluk Nauli, PT North Sumatera Hydro Energy, PT Multi Sibolga Timber, and PT Perkebunan Nusantara IV Kebun Batang Toru.
Findings of Potential Violations
Initial findings indicate potential serious violations related to land use and environmental governance. These include land clearing exceeding approved limits, inadequate protection of concession areas from encroachment, and weak environmental impact management and monitoring.
The companies are specifically accused of negligence in controlling erosion and water runoff, which has contributed to pollution and sedimentation in the Batang Toru and Garoga River Basins.
The Ministry plans a comprehensive review to establish a legal basis and gather technical data to support its findings. Nurofiq stated that legal measures will be taken to ensure environmental restoration and prevent future incidents, prioritizing environmental protection and public safety in all business activities.
