Scientists in Estonia have discovered the tallest aspen tree in Europe, measuring 45.5 meters (149 feet) in height, within the Nigula Nature Reserve in Pärnu County. The discovery surpasses the previous European record by more than four meters.
Record-Breaking Aspen Found in Estonia
Two additional unusually tall aspens were also identified in the same protected nature area, measuring 44.8 and 43.7 meters tall. All three trees exceed the previous Estonian record of 43.2 meters, which was held by an aspen in Valga County.
According to the international database of large trees, Monumental Trees, the previous European record holder was a 41.4-meter-long tree located in Poland.
The discovery was made at the end of March following preparatory work that began with the analysis of LiDAR maps by Enn Pärt, a senior specialist at the Estonian Environment Agency. Measurements were then taken in the field using standard equipment, and later confirmed with specialized instruments providing accuracy to within ten centimeters.
Core samples were taken to assess the tree’s condition. The tallest aspen is approximately 110 years old and currently shows no signs of rot, leading specialists to believe it will continue to grow.
Researchers advise enthusiasts against attempting to independently locate record-holding trees, recommending visits to the forest be conducted with an experienced guide due to nature conservation requirements and the challenging terrain.
