Nine of the 27 European Union (EU) countries are objecting to a proposal to add 2,500 new jobs within the bloc’s governing institutions as part of ongoing budget negotiations.
EU Budget Increase Faces Opposition
A EUR 2 trillion budget proposal for 2028-2034, presented by Brussels, aims to increase staffing levels across the European Union. Currently, the EU institutions employ approximately 51,000 people.
The joint letter, led by Austria, argues that the proposed increase “counter[s] the stated objectives of efficiency, restraint and reform.” The signatories include the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, the Netherlands and Sweden.
European Commission spokesman Balazs Ujvari stated the new positions are necessary to address a “capacity gap.” He explained, “There is more work, more duties to deliver on, but not more staff members. That’s exactly what we are trying to close with the new budget proposal.”
