Evanston’s Sweetest Tradition: Paczki-Eating Contest Honors Legacy, Supports Alzheimer’s Research

A beloved annual tradition returned to Evanston, Illinois, this week, but with a deeper meaning. Bennison’s Bakery hosted its 15th paczki-eating contest, drawing crowds eager to witness a spirited competition and contribute to a vital cause.

The aroma of powdered sugar hung heavy in the air as contestants geared up for the challenge: consuming as many paczki – a traditional Polish pastry similar to a doughnut – as possible in just five minutes. This year’s event, held on February 14th, 2026, wasn’t just about speed and capacity; it was a tribute to a cherished member of the community and a fundraiser for a critical cause.

The History of Paczki and its Chicago Roots

Paczki (pronounced “pownch-key” or “poonch-key”), are deeply rooted in Polish culinary tradition. Originally created to use up ingredients like lard, sugar, and eggs before the fasting period of Lent, these delectable treats are traditionally enjoyed on Fat Tuesday – the day before Ash Wednesday. However, Polish communities also celebrate them on Fat Thursday, the Thursday preceding Mardi Gras.

Polish immigrants brought the tradition of paczki to the Chicago area, where it quickly gained popularity. Today, bakeries across the city, like Bennison’s, offer a wide array of flavors, making them a highly anticipated seasonal delight. Chicago Tribune’s Paczki Guide provides a comprehensive overview of where to find these treats.

Bennison’s Bakery consistently elevates the paczki experience with unique and inventive fillings. This year’s contest featured a tempting selection including lemon cream, apricot, blueberry, and chocolate custard.

Did You Know? The name “paczki” comes from the Polish word “pączki,” which means “little packages.”

A Race Against the Clock, and for a Cause

Twelve teams of two faced off, each armed with a tray of 30 paczki and a strategy for success. Veteran competitors Greg Pressling and Tate Nudo came prepared, bringing their own milk and gloves to aid in their quest. “We brought our own milk, our own gloves, we’re ready to go,” Pressling stated confidently.

The competition was fierce, but ultimately, Teddy Delacruz and Tim “Timmy” Brown emerged victorious. Despite a mid-race illness affecting Brown, the team persevered, securing Delacruz’s second win. “We won, but we should have done better,” Delacruz admitted with a laugh. “Instead of worrying about [Timmy], I should have just kept eating. I slowed myself down.”

Participants paid a $25 entry fee, receiving a Bennison’s paczki contest t-shirt and a $25 bakery gift card. The winning team took home a $200 cash prize.

Honoring “The King” and Fighting Alzheimer’s

This year’s contest held a particularly poignant significance. It was dedicated to the memory of Steve “The King” Bartlebaugh, the original emcee of the event for many years. Bartlebaugh, a close friend of the Downer family, passed away last July after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

“The [Downer family] helped us bring medicines to Steve, getting me things to bring to where he was; they were always helping,” shared Helene Shapiro, Bartlebaugh’s wife. “So when he passed, they decided it should be the Alzheimer’s Association, honoring Steve. It’s kind of like a final goodbye,” or a “continuation of his memory,” she added.

Jory Downer, owner of Bennison’s Bakery, explained that all proceeds from this year’s competition, and a dime from every paczki sold in the past month, would be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association. The event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of community support and the ongoing fight against this devastating disease.
