Fastjet Zimbabwe Deploys First Airbus A320 to Victoria Falls

The short-term lease deployment is designed to meet rising passenger demand during the peak travel season across high-traffic regional routes. According to allafrica.com, the aircraft operates primarily on daily services connecting Harare to Johannesburg and Victoria Falls to Johannesburg.

Government officials welcomed the arrival, describing it as a significant development for the aviation sector. In a statement, the government stated that the deployment reflects the visionary leadership of President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, whose infrastructure-led development agenda continues to position Zimbabwe as a competitive regional aviation hub. The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development emphasized its commitment to an integrated aviation ecosystem supporting economic transformation and regional integration.

Strategic Fleet Evaluation and Peak Season Operations

The temporary introduction of the larger narrow-body aircraft serves as an operational evaluation ahead of a potential permanent fleet upgrade. Donahue Cortes, Business Chief Executive and Country Head of Fastjet Zimbabwe, noted that the timing aligns with the airline’s busiest period of the year.

Beyond supporting our immediate operational requirements, this deployment is an important strategic step, Cortes said, adding that the airline is evaluating the aircraft type within its network to determine if it will become a permanent part of the fleet starting in 2027.

Compared to the Embraer regional jets traditionally operated by the airline, the Airbus A320-200 offers significantly higher passenger capacity, giving the carrier greater flexibility on routes experiencing strong cross-border leisure and business travel.

Introduction of Business Premium Class

Coinciding with the aircraft deployment, Fastjet Zimbabwe announced the introduction of a new Business Premium product available on the Airbus A320-200 throughout the August and September peak travel season.

The cabin class includes: – Extra-wide seats located at the front of the aircraft – Curated menu options with a full bar service on select flight times – Business class lounge access – A combined baggage allowance of 46kg

Chief Commercial Officer Vivian Ruwuya stated that the product was designed to redefine business travel and appeal to business travellers, leisure guests, and passengers seeking greater comfort and personalized service. Bookings are available through fastjet.com, ticket sales offices, travel agents, and other booking platforms.

Airline Background and Safety Standards

Fastjet Zimbabwe has operated since 2015 and connects major cities including Harare, Victoria Falls, and Bulawayo, alongside international flights to Johannesburg and Kruger Mbombela in South Africa. The multi-award-winning airline has flown over two million passengers since its inception.

In 2024, the airline achieved registration under the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Operational Safety Audit, demonstrating adherence to high operational and safety standards as it continues to expand its regional network and evaluate long-term fleet modernizations.
