The plea hearing for former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and former Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho has been postponed as the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) requires additional time to provide disclosures.
Bainimarama and Qiliho Case Delayed
DPP lawyer Luisa Latu requested the court to accept the plea, but Magistrate Yogesh Prasad instructed her to first serve the required disclosures. Latu explained that adverse weather conditions in the Western Division have delayed the receipt of information from the police.
The matter has been adjourned to the 19th of this month, and bail has been extended for both Bainimarama and Qiliho.
Bainimarama is accused of sending Viber messages between January 1st, 2023, and July 31st, 2023, in Suva, to Brigadier General Manoa Gadai, allegedly inciting him to take command and overthrow the authority of the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Major General Jone Kalouniwai.
Both Bainimarama and Qiliho are also accused of inciting mutiny. Between July 1st, 2023, and July 31st, 2023, they allegedly spoke with Lt Colonel Atunaisa Vakatale, Colonel Aseri Rokoura, Colonel Viliame Draunibaka, and other senior RFMF officers in an attempt to incite them to unlawfully arrest and take over the authority of Major General Kalouniwai.
