Michael Katz, an 82-year-old former Rafael Advanced Defense Systems employee, died Wednesday at Rambam Medical Center. He had been critically injured during an Iranian ballistic missile strike in Haifa on April 5, 2026, an attack that also claimed the lives of four members of the Gershovitz family.
A Three-Month Fight for Life in Haifa
The death of Michael Katz marks a somber milestone in the aftermath of the April 5 missile strike, bringing the total death toll from the incident to five. According to Ynetnews, Katz had been fighting for his life at Rambam Medical Center for more than three months following the attack, which occurred at a residential building located at Shimshon Street 57.
The strike, which took place during Operation Roaring Lion, caused a partial collapse of the six-story apartment building. Investigations by the Israeli Air Force revealed that the ballistic missile was not intercepted because it broke up in the air, shifting its trajectory and causing interceptors to miss the target. A section of the weapon, identified as the warhead, struck the building directly. Timesofisrael reported that the warhead failed to detonate upon impact, yet the structural damage was sufficient to destroy the building’s first three floors.
Reflections on a Life of Service
Katz was widely recognized for his decades-long career at Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav stated that Katz dedicated his life to the security of the State of Israel
through his professional contributions to the defense firm.

Beyond his career, family members and officials described a man deeply connected to his community. His wife, Nina, who was also present in the home during the strike and sustained light injuries, shared a poignant tribute regarding their 55 years of marriage.
“On that terrible Sunday, my life was shattered in an instant by an Iranian missile. I was given the gift of a new life, and for that I thank God. But from this day forward, I will live that life as half a person after 55 years of marriage.”
Nina Katz, wife of the deceased
Nina Katz further remembered her husband as someone who possessed a great joie de vivre
and noted that everyone who met him fell in love with him immediately.
His son, Yoav, described him as a man of the world who consumed art and culture in every free moment.
The Toll of Operation Roaring Lion
The incident in Haifa was part of a broader wave of violence during the conflict. Haaretz reported that the same missile strike that wounded Katz also killed his neighbors: Vladimir Gershovitz, Lena Ostrovsky Gershovitz, their son Dimitri, and his wife, Lucille-Jane. Rescue teams faced significant challenges during the recovery operation, with the final body recovered 18 hours after the impact.
Data regarding the impact of the wider operation remains significant. According to reporting by The Times of Israel, a total of 22 Israeli civilians and foreign nationals were killed by Iranian ballistic missile attacks during Operation Roaring Lion, alongside four Palestinians in the West Bank. JNS noted that the total death toll from these specific missile barrages reached 24 by mid-July.
Katz’s funeral is scheduled to be held in Haifa on Thursday. He is survived by his wife, two sons—Itamar and Yoav—and six grandchildren.
