Several government offices in the Philippines have begun implementing a four-day workweek, while others are considering the shift, as part of efforts to conserve energy and address potential economic impacts from rising oil prices.

Four-Day Workweek Implementation

The Office of the President issued Memorandum Circular 114, formalizing President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s order for government agencies to adopt energy conservation protocols and a four-day workweek scheme. Agencies are directed to “strictly adopt” these measures.

Iloilo City is also evaluating the possibility of transitioning to a four-day workweek, according to the Philippine News Agency.

Review of Reduced Work Week Urged

A thorough review of a reduced work week has been urged to ensure its effectiveness. The move comes amid concerns about looming oil price hikes and the need for flexible work arrangements.

Expanded remote work and flexible work setups are being pushed as potential solutions to mitigate the impact of rising oil prices.
