As Gaël Monfils navigates his final season on the ATP circuit, the veteran star has confirmed his return to Montreal for one last appearance at the Omnium Banque Nationale. Organizers announced the decision to grant the Frenchman a wildcard entry, providing him a chance to say goodbye to a city where he has historically thrived. Monfils, who has reached the semifinals of this Masters 1000 event twice—in 2016 and 2019—expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to play before the Montreal crowd one last time.

« Déjà, je suis vraiment très content et je remercie encore une fois le tournoi de m’avoir donné cette opportunité parce que Montréal est une ville que j’ai toujours adorée, une ville où je me suis toujours très, très bien senti », a indiqué l’homme aux 13 titres en carrière, dont trois dans des tournois ATP 500.

Monfils, who made his debut in Montreal in 2009, noted in a statement that he is « très reconnaissant d’avoir la chance de revenir jouer une dernière fois devant les partisans montréalais, qui comptent parmi les meilleurs du monde, et de les remercier pour tout le soutien qu’ils m’ont témoigné au cours de toutes ces années ».

Tournament Field and Canadian Participation

The edition of the tournament, featuring a high-caliber field, will see 71 of the 72 best players in the world competing at the Stade IGA, according to tournament director Valérie Tétreault. While the Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz will be absent, the field includes world No. 1, the Italian Jannik Sinner, who has won the last six Masters 1000 tournaments, as well as the defending champion, the American Ben Shelton (5th).

Canadian tennis will be represented by Félix Auger-Aliassime, who will be the highest-ranked Canadian to ever participate in the Omnium Banque Nationale. The 2024 champion, Alexei Popyrin, will be back in Montreal this summer to attempt to repeat his feat, but he will have to go through the qualifying rounds. The Australian, currently 103rd in the world, is one of 32 players who will seek to secure a place in the main draw during the tournament’s single day of qualifying on August 2. The British player Arthur Féry, who recently reached the semifinals at Wimbledon, moving from 114th to 36th position in the ATP rankings, will also be competing.

For Monfils, the upcoming Montreal appearance is part of an emotional final season. Earlier this year, on January 20, 2026, the 39-year-old played his 20th Australian Open and 69th Grand Slam appearance. In a first-round match at Melbourne Park, he lost to local qualifier Dane Sweeny in four sets. The match served as a final show for the veteran, as he bid adieu to the Australian Open with a capacity crowd at Kia Arena. Having announced his retirement to take place at the end of the season, his appearance in Montreal marks one of his final professional stops.
