Gaelic Warrior Triumphs in Thrilling Cheltenham Gold Cup, Securing Historic Victory for Townend and Mullins
Cheltenham Racecourse witnessed history unfold on Friday afternoon as Gaelic Warrior, the 11/4 joint-favourite, stormed to victory in the 2026 Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup. The German-bred gelding delivered a commanding performance, finishing eight lengths ahead of the competition in the prestigious chase.
A Week of Dominance: Mullins and Townend’s Unprecedented Cheltenham Run
This Gold Cup win caps an extraordinary week for jockey Paul Townend and trainer Willie Mullins, solidifying their status as titans of the National Hunt racing world. Their remarkable success began on Tuesday with Lossiemouth’s triumph in the Champion Hurdle, continued on Wednesday with Il Etait Temps’ victory in the Champion Chase, and culminated today with Gaelic Warrior’s dominant display.
Townend and Mullins Reach New Heights
Paul Townend’s victory marks a historic milestone, making him the winningmost jockey in the history of the Cheltenham Gold Cup with a total of five wins. His previous successes came with Al Boum Photo (2019, 2020), Galopin des Champs (2023, 2024), and now Gaelic Warrior. Willie Mullins now shares the record for most Cheltenham Gold Cup wins as a trainer, equaling the five victories achieved by the legendary Tom Dreaper. Mullins’ winning horses include Al Boum Photo (2019, 2020), Galopin des Champs (2023, 2024), and today’s champion, Gaelic Warrior.
Mullins Reflects on a “Spectacular” Performance
“It was just extraordinary,” an elated Mullins admitted after the race. “I’m delighted for the Riccis – they’ve been fantastic owners. Actually, they are the second owners to win both the Champion Hurdle and the Gold Cup in the same season, after Dorothy Paget. I’m delighted for Paul Townend, who gave him such a cool, calculated ride. You have to wonder what was going through his head approaching the last fence – I certainly had a few anxieties! We’ve had some heart-stopping moments at that fence in the past. The way he did it today was truly spectacular.”
Gaelic Warrior controlled the pace for much of the three miles, two furlongs, and 70 yards race. He surged into the lead two fences from home, leaving only the final two obstacles between him and glory. Townend navigated those fences with precision, and the eight-year-old son of Maxios bounded up the famous Cheltenham hill to secure a decisive eight-length victory over Jango Baie, ridden by Nico de Boinville for trainer Nicky Henderson.
Last year’s Gold Cup winner, Inothewayurthinkin, under jockey Mark Walsh, adopted a rearward position for most of the race. While his jumping wasn’t entirely fluent, he rallied to finish third, two lengths behind Jango Baie, carrying the colours of J.P. McManus.
Townend’s Gold Cup Legacy: “They Just Get Better and Better”
“It’s the Gold Cup,” said a visibly emotional Paul Townend, hailing from Lisgoold, Co Cork. “I always say they just get better and better. Oh my God, I’m speechless! We faced a setback with Galopin Des Champs being withdrawn, but thankfully, this horse stepped up. Patrick [Mullins, assistant trainer] had immense faith in him. It’s been a huge team effort, and I was just fortunate to be in the saddle today.”
The victory wasn’t without its shadow. A tragic postscript to the race was the sudden death of Envoi Allen, a former Ryanair Chase winner, who collapsed after the Gold Cup.
