Gardaí are investigating an assault on a staff member at the Accident and Emergency Department of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning while the A&E department was busy with patients.

Second Alleged Assault at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital

Although the victim was not seriously injured, medical staff are reportedly angry and shocked by the attack. This is the second alleged assault to take place at the hospital in recent weeks.

In a previous incident, a nurse and a member of the cleaning staff were assaulted by a patient with psychiatric issues.

A hospital staff member stated that 24-hour security has been restored to the A&E department, but concerns about safety remain. “It is hard enough to do this job without patients getting angry and then turning on us,” they said.

The Lourdes Hospital A&E has experienced a surge in patients due to the recent winter flu epidemic. The HSE has issued a public statement requesting that individuals avoid visiting the hospital unless their condition is life-threatening.

In a statement, Gardaí said: “Gardai received a report of an assault at a premises in Moneymore, Drogheda, Co Louth which occurred at 1.25am on 9th February, 2026. No arrests have been made at this time and enquiries are ongoing.”

Twenty-four-hour security at the hospital’s accident and emergency department had been reduced to 12 daytime hours last Autumn due to financial cutbacks. However, it was reinstated following the previous violent incident.

The HSE stated that the safety of their staff is a priority and that abusive and violent behavior will not be tolerated.
