Ira Parker Teases Dunk and Egg Book Four and Unpublished Prose

The expansion of the Game of Thrones universe on television might soon receive fresh source material directly from its creator. Ira Parker, the showrunner steering the live-action adaptation of the tales of Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), revealed that George R.R. Martin is working on a fourth installment in the novella series. While HBO has only received a green light for up to Season 2 of the adaptation, Parker has stated in the past that he’d love to expand this live-action version into three seasons or maybe four or five.

Parker teased that the fourth book George is working on takes place in a very cool location. He added that the fifth is the final story point for Egg as a boy, making it a very natural place for them to take a break and return when Dexter is older, allowing them to portray Egg the Prince, incorporate some politics, feature fun elements in Summer Hall and King’s Landing, and achieve a different vibe where they are not constantly on the road.

Beyond prospective storylines, the television creative team has already drawn upon unpublished material straight from the author’s personal files. Parker confirmed that he and the team have laid eyes on some of Martin’s unpublished work, noting that he provided some unpublished pages of actual written prose discovered in his files somewhere, which they subsequently used.

While television adaptations forge ahead, the wait for the next main-series installment continues to drive intense discussion across the fandom. As readers mark 15 years and counting since the release of the fifth and sixth books in the series, online communities have increasingly gravitated toward an unconventional theory regarding the manuscript’s true status.

A persistent rumor gaining traction across a newly posted Reddit thread and other community spaces suggests that The Winds of Winter may already be finished, with the author simply choosing not to release it until after his death. Proponents of this theory argue that a posthumous rollout would mean Martin does not have to deal with the fan reaction to the book and any backlash they might have about the direction he takes the characters and stories in.

Discussions surrounding fan hostility frequently point back to the severe backlash that met the final season of the television adaptation. Although HBO executives have mostly given him “eye rollsover the scheduling proposal, it sounds like they'renot completely” turned off by it. Should the show wrap and people are still okay with everything being done while there is still an appetite, the creative team hopes to tell a story about these two guys through the course of their lives.
