For more than a decade, Robert Downey Jr. defined the backbone of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Tony Stark, anchoring the franchise from 2008’s Iron Man through 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Now, the Oscar-winning actor returns to the mega-franchise in a starkly different light, shedding his armor to portray Victor von Doom, one of comic book history’s most iconic supervillains originating in the fifth issue of the Fantastic Four comic series in 1962.

Stepping behind the mask of a villain created a genuinely strange dynamic during production. Speaking about the transition, the actor explained that while Tony Stark was shaped by trauma into a hero, Doom represents the absolute inverse.

Robert Downey Jr. stated that they are dealing with science and considered very brilliant guys, but trauma made a hero out of Tony, whereas Doom got the exact opposite, which is why it will take the courage of all these people to fight him, adding that it was a joy to put this together.

In English translation, the actor noted that while the characters possess brilliant scientific minds, it was very strange to be on the other side of the bad guy’s mask, such an isolated feeling, and I see them hanging out and I’m the enemy. The trailer emphasizes this formidable presence, showing Doom stopping Thor’s hammer Mjölnir, signaling that the entire multiverse is at risk.

Serving as the 39th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and building upon a massive ensemble cast, Avengers: Doomsday acts as a culmination of the past seven years post-Endgame. The newly released Hungarian dubbed trailer for the film—officially titled Avengers: The Awakening of Doctor Doom—confirms several key casting choices for local audiences ahead of the December 17, 2026 Hungarian theatrical release.

While Robert Downey Jr. returns to the franchise, distributors made the deliberate decision not to use Fekete Ernő, the actor who previously voiced Tony Stark in the Hungarian dubs. Instead, Pataki Ferenc provides the voice for Doctor Doom, a choice designed to auditorily separate the new villain from Iron Man.

Other core veterans retain their traditional Hungarian voices. Nagy Ervin returns to voice Thor, while Zámbori Soma reprises his role voicing Chris Evans’s returning Steve Rogers. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the film paves the way for its 2027 sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars.
