The 2026 Commonwealth Games officially commence in Glasgow today, July 23, with lawn bowls serving as the opening discipline. Indian athletes, including the women’s pairs team of Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh, begin sectional-stage competition at the SEC Centre before the evening’s opening ceremony at the OVO Hydro.
Lawn Bowls Takes Center Stage at Glasgow 2026
Lawn bowls has been selected as the first event of the 23rd Commonwealth Games, with competition beginning today, July 23, at the SEC Centre in Glasgow. The 2026 edition marks a significant shift for the sport: for the first time in Commonwealth Games history, the event is being held indoors. This indoor format is expected to provide a more controlled environment while bringing spectators closer to the action compared to the outdoor greens used in previous cycles, such as the 2022 Birmingham Games.
The sport is a game of precision, similar to petanque or curling, played on a green stretch of land. The objective is to roll bowls as close as possible to a smaller target ball called the “jack” or “kitty.” What makes the sport challenging is that the bowls are slightly heavier on one side, a weight imbalance known as the “bias.” As the bowl slows down, it curves gracefully toward its heavier side, allowing players to steer around opponent bowls that might be blocking the direct path to the target. Matches are played in four formats: singles, pairs, triples, and fours. Only two teams can compete in a single game, which starts with a team rolling the jack from one end toward the opposite end; the jack must travel a minimum distance to be in play.
Indian Contingent’s Opening Day Schedule
India enters the Glasgow Games with heightened expectations following their historic medal haul in Birmingham. In 2022, the women’s fours team of Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia, and Rupa Rani Tirkey clinched a historic gold medal, while the men’s fours team—comprising Sunil Bahadur, Navneet Singh, Chandan Singh, and Dinesh Kumar—settled for silver after losing the final to Northern Ireland. These performances established India as an emerging force in a sport traditionally dominated by Australia, England, and Scotland, the latter two having won 20 gold medals each in the sport’s history.

The Indian contingent for 2026 consists of 125 athletes—77 male and 48 female—competing across 13 disciplines, including eight able-bodied sports and five para-sports. The schedule for India’s opening day at the SEC Centre is as follows:
- 4:50 PM IST: Women’s pairs, sectional play – Pinki Singh and Rupa Rani Tirkey (India) vs. Connie Rixon and Rebecca Rixon (Malta).
- 6:15 PM IST: Men’s singles, sectional play – Putul Sonowal (India) vs. Ryan Bester (Canada).
The matchup between Putul Sonowal and Ryan Bester is the headline fixture of the day. Sonowal, ranked No. 21 in the world, faces one of the sport’s most decorated players in Bester, who is the reigning men’s singles world champion and a World Bowls Hall of Famer.
Glasgow Opening Ceremony and Tournament Scope
Following the conclusion of today’s lawn bowls sessions, the focus will shift to the official opening ceremony. The event will take place at the OVO Hydro arena in Glasgow at 10:30 PM IST. The 2026 Games will run from July 23 to August 2, featuring approximately 3,000 athletes from 74 nations competing in 215 events across 10 sports. Beyond lawn bowls, India will compete in athletics, boxing, weightlifting, judo, artistic gymnastics, track cycling, and swimming, alongside para-athletics, 3×3 wheelchair basketball, para-powerlifting, para-swimming, and para-track cycling.

While some traditional sports are absent from this streamlined edition, individual stars remain key to India’s medal hopes. Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra, who missed the Birmingham 2022 Games due to injury, is set to compete in the men’s javelin throw final on August 1 at Scotstoun Stadium. Additionally, two-time Commonwealth medalist Mirabai Chanu is scheduled to compete in weightlifting between July 26 and July 30. For now, the Indian team is looking for a clean start to the tournament as the group stages unfold.
