Government wins Dáil vote on Larry Murrin role

The Dáil Éireann has voted to express support for Larry Murrin, chairman of Bord Bia, following a motion proposed by Sinn Féin calling for his removal. The government used its majority to amend the motion to a vote of confidence in Mr. Murrin after concerns were raised about his company’s sourcing of Brazilian beef.

Motion of Support for Larry Murrin

Sinn Féin proposed the motion after it was revealed that 1% of the beef used by Dawn Farm Foods, a company where Mr. Murrin is involved, came from Brazil. The government opposed the original motion and instead amended it to demonstrate support for Mr. Murrin.

The amended motion passed with 88 votes in favor and 61 against. The vote comes as members of the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) continue to protest at Bord Bia headquarters on Pembroke Road in Dublin, calling for Mr. Murrin’s resignation.

Tánaiste Simon Harris stated last week that the government would not remove Mr. Murrin from his position, accusing Sinn Féin of pursuing a politically motivated outcome. “This is not about food on the table, it is about a head on a plate,” Harris said in the Dáil.

Farming groups, including the IFA, ICSA, and ICMSA, argue that Mr. Murrin’s position creates a conflict of interest, given Bord Bia’s role in promoting Irish food products. Dawn Farms has stated that Brazilian beef accounted for less than 1% of its total supply last year.
