Hundreds of friends and family welcomed the HMNZS Aotearoa home to Devonport Naval Base in Auckland on Tuesday, marking the end of an eight-month deployment. The ship traveled over 31,000 nautical miles, conducting exercises and operations across the Indo-Pacific region, from Antarctica to the Korean Peninsula.
HMNZS Aotearoa Returns from Eight-Month Deployment
The HMNZS Aotearoa was away from New Zealand for 307 days. Throughout the deployment, the ship served as a fleet tanker, providing critical support such as resupplying Scott Base and McMurdo Station, and refueling ships from partner nations including Australia, Canada, France, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam.
Chief of Navy Rear Admiral Garin Golding emphasized the mission’s importance in demonstrating New Zealand’s commitment to the international rules-based system. “You can’t just talk about it – you have to be at sea doing it – and your friends and partners and the international community need to see you do it as well. HMNZS Aotearoa and the ship’s company have certainly been out there doing exactly that,” he said.
Commander Rob Welford, the ship’s Commanding Officer, stated the entire crew could take “real pride” in their accomplishments over the past year.
The HMNZS Aotearoa and its crew will now take leave before beginning preparations for another operational year in 2026.
