A domestic helper described her life as “chaotic” following a devastating fire in Hong Kong that killed 161 people and displaced hundreds more. The blaze, which broke out on November 26, engulfed seven of the eight buildings in the Wang Fuk Court housing estate.
Hong Kong Fire Displaces Hundreds
Siti Zulaikho, a 41-year-old Indonesian woman, was among the more than 200 domestic helpers residing in Wang Fuk Court when the fire erupted. She narrowly escaped the blaze from Wang Shing House with only her phone and ID card.
Over the past month, Zulaikho has relocated four times with her employers – initially to a shelter, then a hotel, and subsequently to transitional housing in Yuen Long and Fan Ling. Another move is planned to new accommodation in Tuen Mun.
“I am physically tired, and my mind is also tired,” Zulaikho said. “I cannot sleep soundly.”
She has been relying on assistance from NGOs, the government, and her local consulate to rebuild her life after losing all her possessions in the fire.
On a recent Sunday, Zulaikho was among dozens of Indonesian survivors who received aid, including suitcases of supplies and shoes, provided by six local NGOs.
