An inquiry is underway to examine patterns of abuse spanning the last 30 years in England and Wales, vowing to investigate all potential contributing factors and hold individuals accountable. The Statutory Independent Inquiry into Grooming Gangs aims to address failures to believe, dismiss, or blame victims who sought help.

The inquiry will not shy away from investigating culture, ethnicity, and religion as potential factors that led to the abuse and exploitation of victims. It promises to publish findings as they emerge, rather than waiting for a single report years in the future.
Local investigations will be conducted, with Oldham confirmed as one of the first areas to be examined. A framework for selecting further areas will be published within three months.
Baroness Longfield, chair of the inquiry, stated that children across England and Wales have been and continue to be sexually abused and exploited. She emphasized that victims and survivors deserve to know if this inquiry will differ from previous investigations.
“We will follow the evidence wherever it leads. We will not flinch from uncomfortable truths,” Longfield said.
