Hungary Assumes Command of NATO Multinational Division Centre Headquarters

Leadership of the NATO Multinational Division Centre (HQ MND-C) shifted hands at the end of July 2026, marking a milestone for Hungary’s armed forces within the transatlantic alliance. Major General Tibor Králik of Slovakia officially transferred command to Major General László Antal during a formal ceremony on July 31, 2026, after leading the multinational headquarters for three years.

The transition places a Hungarian general in charge of the alliance’s division-level headquarters for the first time. Under his predecessor’s tenure, the command achieved Full Operational Capability and solidified its standing within the broader NATO command structure. Reflecting on the evolution of the multinational unit during his farewell address, the outgoing Slovak commander emphasized the collaborative nature of the defense mission.

Králik added that only change is constant as leaders and teams rotate through postings over time, noting that what remains is the spirit of cooperation, professional excellence, and commitment to our common mission. An honor guard from the Hungarian armed forces stood present during the ceremonial handover.

New Staff Appointments and Upcoming Strong Bastion 27 Exercise

Alongside the change at the top, several key leadership positions within the headquarters changed hands. Colonel Ján Hric of Slovakia stepped in as the new general chief of staff. Simultaneously, Brigadier General Drazen Ressler of Croatia assumed the role of deputy commander, succeeding Major General Garas of Hungary.

Looking ahead, the headquarters faces an intensive operational schedule. Preparations are already underway for the Strong Bastion 27 exercise, which is slated to serve as a vital milestone toward securing future wartime mission capabilities.

Broader NATO Eastern Flank Readiness and Regional Deterrence

The command transition at HQ MND-C occurs within a broader framework of heightened vigilance across the alliance’s eastern perimeter. Operative defense of the eastern flank involves major strategic coordination stretching across a nearly 3,900-kilometer border running from Norway and Finland down through the Baltic states and Hungary.
