Indonesia plans to reclaim approximately 190,000 hectares of forest land currently used for mining operations without the necessary permits. The large-scale effort, carried out by military-backed task forces, has impacted the mining and palm oil industries and contributed to rising global commodity prices.
Indonesia Targets Illegal Mining Operations
Authorities have already regained control of roughly 8,800 hectares from illegal operators and are continuing to expand these efforts. Officials have not yet disclosed the names of the companies involved or a specific timeline for future land seizures.
Indonesia has previously seized millions of hectares of illegally established palm plantations. Prosecutors are currently evaluating potential fines exceeding 140 trillion rupiah for firms operating on protected forest land.
