Indonesia is confident that a newly formed Board of Peace, initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump, will complement, not replace, the United Nations’ role in Gaza recovery and peace-building efforts, according to Foreign Minister Sugiono.
Indonesia Supports Board of Peace Initiative
“Will it replace the United Nations? I do not think so,” Sugiono stated while speaking in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland, on Friday.
He stressed that the Board of Peace is intended to contribute to peace and stability in Gaza alongside the UN, not supersede its mandate.
Indonesia views its participation in the Board of Peace as a positive step, consistent with its ongoing support for the Palestinian cause.
“We are a country that yearns for peace and global stability, in particular seeking to address the situation in Palestine. As the Board of Peace is established to realize the peace we seek, we must take part in it,” Sugiono said.
Prior to joining, Indonesia engaged in consultations with the Group of New York countries, and was later joined by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey, among others.
Sugiono described the Board of Peace as a “long-awaited concrete step” toward consolidating peace in Palestine, particularly in Gaza.
He expressed hope that the Board’s activities will be focused on achieving Palestinian independence and a two-state solution.
President Prabowo Subianto signed the Board of Peace Charter on Thursday (January 22) during the 2026 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
President Prabowo characterized the organization as a “historical opportunity” to achieve peace in Gaza, and affirmed Indonesia’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian people.
