Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto welcomed Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Friday, aiming to strengthen bilateral relations and discuss pressing global issues.

Strengthening Indonesia-Malaysia Ties

Prime Minister Anwar arrived at the palace courtyard at 4:25 p.m. local time, escorted by 17 motorist troops. President Prabowo personally greeted him upon his arrival.

The two leaders enjoyed a performance of the Indonesian traditional folk song “Rasa Sayange” from Maluku by the music corps, with Anwar briefly singing along. They then entered the palace together, exchanging cordial conversation.

The meeting focused on furthering bilateral ties and fostering a personal rapport between the leaders of the neighboring nations. The Indonesian government hopes this close bond will contribute to harmonious relations and mutual support in addressing regional and global challenges.

Anwar arrived in Jakarta on Friday afternoon and was welcomed by Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono.

Discussion of Geopolitical Issues

Anwar stated his intention to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and exchanging perspectives on geopolitics with President Prabowo, particularly concerning the Middle East conflict. The meeting, at Prabowo’s invitation, is also expected to address the implications of the war for both countries, as well as the regional and global economy and stability.

This meeting follows a phone conversation held on Monday, March 23, during which they discussed the conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
