The Ipoh City Council (MBI) has officially denied online allegations claiming that Chinese characters were installed alongside the iconic “IPOH” sign on the hillside near Jalan Kuala Kangsar. The council confirmed on Wednesday, July 22, that the circulating image is false and is believed to have been manipulated using artificial intelligence (AI) technology or digital editing techniques.

MBI clarified that the iconic “IPOH” signage is currently undergoing a period of maintenance and is not in its usual state. The lettering was safely dismantled on July 15 to facilitate a comprehensive inspection of its structure and physical condition.
As reported by Ipoh Echo, the council stated that this measure was taken to ensure the landmark remains safe, well-maintained, and preserved as a symbol of pride for the city. The reinstallation of the sign is scheduled to be carried out in stages from August 4 to August 6, depending on weather conditions and the progress of work at the site.

Mayor Zamakhshari Hanipah emphasized that any image displaying additional text or characters alongside the word “IPOH” at the location is misleading and does not reflect the actual situation. The council has taken a firm stance against the creation and dissemination of such content.
