Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard opened fire on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, damaging the vessel as planned ceasefire talks in Pakistan failed to materialize.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that the attack occurred around 7:55 a.m. According to the UKMTO, a Guard gunboat did not hail the ship before opening fire.
No injuries were reported, and there was no environmental impact resulting from the attack.
Escalating Tensions and the Strait of Hormuz Attack
Iranian news agencies Fars and Tasnim, which are believed to be close to the Guard, reported on the incident. Fars described the action as “lawfully enforcing” Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz.
The strait serves as the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf and is a critical transit point through which 20% of the world’s traded crude oil and natural gas once passed.
While the strait is located within the territorial waters of Iran and Oman, it has been considered an international waterway for global shippers.
This event follows recent military actions by the U.S., which seized an Iranian container ship after shooting it last weekend. Additionally, U.S. forces boarded an oil tanker associated with Iran’s oil trade in the Indian Ocean.
