Airstrikes in Iran and the surrounding region killed at least 18 people, with Israel also reporting missile attacks, escalating tensions in the area. The strikes come as more than 3,500 people have been killed since the conflict began on February 28, with thousands more injured.
Strikes in Iran
The Iran Daily newspaper reported that an airstrike in a residential area of Qom, a holy Shiite seminary city south of Tehran, killed at least five people. The target of the strike was not immediately clear.
Another 13 people were killed when an airstrike hit a residential building in Eslamshar, a suburban area on the southern outskirts of Tehran. Iran has not provided overall casualty figures or reported material losses in recent days.
The targeted grounds of a university were also struck, though it was not immediately clear what specifically was targeted. The university is currently empty of students as all schools in the country have moved to online classes due to the war. Multiple countries have sanctioned the university over the years for its work with the military, particularly on Iran’s ballistic missile program, which is controlled by the country’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard.
Regional Alerts and Responses
In Israel, authorities sounded one missile alert. In Dubai, United Arab Emirates, two missile alerts went off, with air defences firing, though the target of the Iranian attacks was not immediately clear.
Kuwait also reported that its air defences intercepted incoming missiles overnight.
A total of 15 countries have been the target of missile and drone attacks since the conflict began, disrupting air travel, global shipping and energy markets. The US, Israel and Iran are the main aggressors.
