Donald Trump is weighing options regarding Iran after warning the U.S. was “locked and loaded” and prepared to respond to a violent crackdown on protesters. The president faces a dilemma: act decisively and risk unintended consequences, or stand by as Iranian authorities suppress demonstrations and potentially damage his standing.
Trump Considers Response to Iran Crackdown
Ten days ago, Trump warned that the U.S. was “locked and loaded and ready to go,” stating the United States would “come to their rescue” if Iranian authorities reacted with violence against protesters. At the time, a widespread violent crackdown by Iranian security forces was not evident.
However, the situation has changed, prompting the president to decide whether to follow through on his threat and how to proceed. A meeting with top military and security officials is scheduled to address the matter.
Trump has offered few details about his potential response, only mentioning he is “looking at some very strong options.” He has also suggested that regime change is a consideration.
“Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before,” Trump posted on social media Saturday. “The USA stands ready to help!!!”
The president also stated that Iranian authorities contacted him over the weekend seeking negotiations, though he did not specify the subject of those discussions. He indicated that a meeting between the two sides is being arranged, but also suggested he might be compelled to act before any talks take place.
