Irish troops stationed in southern Lebanon are safe and prepared for increased tensions in the region, according to a Defence Forces spokesman. Operations are continuing while force protection measures are adjusted to reflect the evolving security situation.
Irish Troops in Lebanon Amidst Escalating Hostilities
Commandant Alex Quigley stated that Irish personnel are well-accounted for and equipped to operate in the current environment, despite ongoing strikes. He noted that personnel have been temporarily deployed to bunkers on occasion, including yesterday, but are still able to maintain situational awareness and fulfill their mandated tasks.
Patrol routines have been disrupted, but troops remain in position, utilizing bunkers and maintaining communication with forward posts to report observations. Any decision regarding troop movement will be made at UNIFIL headquarters, in coordination with the UN and the Irish government, Quigley confirmed.
The United Nations reports that at least 30,000 people in Lebanon have been displaced due to the recent escalation of hostilities. Family liaison officers are available to assist troops in contacting their families, and WiFi access is available in the camp when conditions allow. Updates will also be provided via the Defence Forces’ social media channels.
Israel Establishes Buffer Zone
Israel has announced the creation of a buffer zone within Lebanon and has ordered its troops to take control of additional strategic positions following the launch of projectiles from Lebanese territory. Brigadier General Effie Defrin stated that the Israeli military is establishing a buffer “between our residents and any threat.”
In response, the Lebanese army has redeployed soldiers from recently established border positions, according to a Lebanese military source. The Lebanese government recently outlawed Hezbollah’s military activities, a move condemned by the pro-Hezbollah al-Akhbar newspaper.
Thousands Flee Border Area, Syria Reinforces Border
Residents of dozens of south Lebanon villages have been ordered to evacuate by the Israeli military. One evacuee, Nuzha Salame, described the current displacement as more difficult than previous ones, citing hardship and deprivation.
Syria has reinforced its border with Lebanon with rocket units and thousands of troops, according to eight Syrian and Lebanese sources. The reinforcement operation began in February and has accelerated in recent days, aiming to prevent arms and drug smuggling and to block potential infiltration by Iran-backed Hezbollah or other militants. Syrian officials stated that Damascus has no plans for military action against neighboring countries but is prepared to address any security threats.
