Isaac Cooper Steps Down From Dolphins Leadership After Glasgow Games Incident

Cooper, a two-time Olympian, found himself in the crosshairs of team officials after a drinking session in Glasgow coincided with the most critical night of the swimming program.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Cooper was hauled in by team officials and reprimanded by Australian head coach Rohan Taylor. The breach wasn’t about the alcohol itself—there were no curfews or restrictions on drinking once an athlete’s events concluded—but about the abandonment of team expectations. Swimmers are required to support their teammates at the pool before attending a final wrap-up meeting.

On Tuesday evening, he swam a semi-final in the 100m backstroke, qualifying eighth-fastest. On Wednesday morning, he performed the lead-off leg of the men’s 4x100m medley relay prelims, a contribution that earned him a gold medal when the team won the final.

However, by Wednesday evening, Cooper was a surprise scratching from the 100m backstroke final. While News.com.au reports this withdrawal was due to a minor stress fracture in his spine, the controversy stems from where he spent the evening. Three sources told the Sydney Morning Herald that Cooper was out drinking in the city and was also seen drinking at the Australian team headquarters.

The absence left teammates surprised, particularly because Cooper had recently been appointed to the athlete leadership group. He also missed a training session the following day.

A Pattern of Behavioral Indiscretions

This incident is not Cooper’s first brush with disciplinary action. In 2022, he was sent home from a training camp in France during the build-up to the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. At the time, Swimming Australia cited some wellbeing challenges, including the use of medication.

The 2026 leadership collapse is particularly poignant because Cooper had recently spoken about the pride he felt in earning back the trust of his peers.

Pan Pacific Championships and Future Status

Despite the leadership resignation, Swimming Australia has opted not to send Cooper home. He remains eligible to compete and has already traveled to the United States for the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, which begin on August 12. He is currently working with the team doctor to heal the spinal fracture mentioned in reports.

Cooper’s individual performance in Glasgow was a mixed bag. While he secured a relay gold, he finished sixth in the 50m backstroke final—a result that falls short of the silver medal he earned at the 2024 World Championships. His standing as the premier Australian backstroker has also been challenged; 18-year-old Henry Allan finished fifth in the 50m, 100m, and 200m events, edging out Cooper in the 50m by one-hundredth of a second.
