Jadeveon Clowney Signs One-Year Deal to Return to Houston Texans

Jadeveon Clowney is putting his first professional uniform back on. The three-time Pro Bowl pass rusher has agreed to terms on a one-year deal to return to the Houston Texans, according to NFL Network Insiders Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport. The agreement caps off an open-market journey that extended past the start of training camp, bringing the 33-year-old edge defender back to the organization where his NFL career began.

The reunion follows a productive visit with the Cleveland Browns, where general manager Andrew Berry expressed public optimism about securing a deal. Instead of heading back to Cleveland, where he played from 2021 to 2022, Clowney chose a homecoming in the AFC South, as reported by ESPN.

Building Out a Dominant Houston Pass Rush

Clowney joins a defensive front in Houston that expects to rank among the league’s elite units. The pass rush features established starters Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter. Anderson signed a $50MM-per-year extension in the spring, while Hunter inked a one-year extension featuring heavy guarantees. Clowney’s arrival gives the defense a robust rotational piece capable of wearing down offensive lines and pressuring opposing quarterbacks.

The Texans enter the season with significant flexibility, holding over $27MM in cap space entering the weekend alongside another veteran addition in linebacker Sione Takitaki. Clowney returns to Houston after logging a team-high 8.5 sacks across 13 games and six starts for the Dallas Cowboys in 2025. He joined Dallas on a one-year, $3.5 million contract following Micah Parsons’ departure to the Green Bay Packers. Despite missing a game with a hamstring injury and seeing limited snaps early in the year, Clowney finished the campaign with 41 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 33 pressures, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, and four pass deflections.

His output peaked in the season finale against the New York Giants, where he recorded 2.5 sacks and six tackles. Reflecting on his time in Dallas, Clowney noted the unique visibility of playing on prime-time broadcasts, including Thanksgiving and Christmas matchups.

The path back to Texas has been well-traveled. After the Texans selected him with the top pick in the 2014 NFL draft out of South Carolina, Clowney spent five seasons in Houston, earning Pro Bowl nods from 2016 through 2018. Former coach Bill O’Brien traded him to the Seattle Seahawks ahead of the 2019 season following stalled contract talks over his financial value as an unsigned franchise player.

Since leaving Houston, Clowney has played for the Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers, and Dallas Cowboys. His career production includes 66.5 sacks, highlighted by a 9.5-sack season with Baltimore in 2023.
