Japan Storm Deaths: Soldiers & Snowplows Battle Winter Freeze

Record-breaking snowfalls have paralyzed parts of northern and western Japan, leading to at least 30 deaths from winter storms and prompting the deployment of soldiers and snow plows to clear the heavy accumulation.

Japan Battles Historic Snowstorms, Deaths Rise

Troops from the Self-Defense Forces are assisting authorities in clearing nearly 7 feet of snow in the city of Aomori, the largest snowfall the area has seen in four decades.

Approximately 1,000 snow plows are working to clear 2,300 miles of roads in Sapporo, the largest city in the Hokkaido region, according to broadcaster Nippon TV.

Hokkaido’s main airport was temporarily closed last week due to the heavy snowfall, stranding hundreds of passengers and disrupting train services and highway travel.

Nationwide, more than 100 people have sustained serious injuries in snow-related incidents since Jan. 20. Domestic media reports indicate that some deaths were caused by falls from rooftops while people attempted to clear snow.
