Flood alerts issued as Southeast Texas prepares for several days of intense rain
Southeast Texas is preparing for multiple days of heavy rainfall, causing concerns of swollen rivers and flash flooding. Flood alerts have been issued in anticipation of these potential hazards.
The Houston branch of the National Weather Service predicts that Southeast Texas may receive one to three more inches of precipitation, with certain areas potentially receiving an additional four to eight inches. There is also a chance of destructive winds, sizable hail, and solitary tornadoes.
Impending Danger
According to the Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, 233 individuals and 164 animals were saved in the county by Sunday morning. Fortunately, there have been no casualties or fatalities reported at this time.
The rivers in Southeast Texas are at risk of overflowing for a prolonged duration due to repeated heavy rainfall. In the past few days, severe storms have already caused evacuations and rescue operations. Meteorologists are now cautioning that Houston may experience flash flooding as the storms persist.
Besides the flooding, the storms also resulted in power outages in the area. Oncor, a company providing energy in Texas, stated that approximately 10,000 customers were experiencing a lack of electricity on Sunday afternoon.
Rescue Efforts
The severe circumstances have been made worse by the persistent storms, and experts anticipate that after the storms subside, waterways may remain overly full for several days or possibly even weeks. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), around 2.1 million individuals in Texas were alerted for potential floods on Sunday morning. In Houston, numerous flood measurement devices are projected to surpass or equal their previous flood records.
As of Sunday, there are currently eleven rivers experiencing severe flooding, resulting in widespread evacuations due to excessive overflow on roads and buildings. An additional eighteen rivers are also facing moderate flooding, which may also necessitate evacuations and the potential inundation of specific structures.
Increasing Risk
On Saturday, game wardens from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department conducted rescue missions in Liberty County, Texas, to rescue individuals from floodwaters.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) stated that multiple rivers in Texas have not yet reached their peak levels, but are predicted to do so in the next 24 hours. Even after reaching their peak, these rivers will slowly recede, remaining above the threshold for major flooding until the middle of the week.
Continued Flooding Threat
Jeremy Justice, hydrological operations manager at the Harris County Flood Control District, expressed concern that parts of Harris County could experience flooding near the record levels set during Hurricane Harvey in 2017. This devastating event claimed at least 68 lives and caused 5 billion in damage.
The Weather Prediction Center of the Weather Service has released a flood alert for Houston that will extend into the evening, drawing attention to the rising risk of urban flash floods in the region. Furthermore, flash flood advisories were declared on Sunday morning in multiple counties in Texas, specifically Jasper, Newton, and Tyler Counties.
