Researchers have identified that a massive asteroid breakup 800 million years ago, triggered by gravitational interactions with Jupiter, likely initiated a significant meteor bombardment across the inner solar system. This event impacted Earth, the Moon, and Mars, potentially altering the evolutionary history of these planetary bodies.
The Role of Jupiter’s Orbital Resonance
The cosmic bombardment event traces back to the fragmentation of a parent asteroid known as Eulalia. Eulalia disintegrated while situated near a critical area known as the J3:1
mean-motion orbital resonance with Jupiter.
In this specific region, an asteroid completes three orbits around the Sun for every single orbit of Jupiter. This configuration subjects the asteroid to regular gravitational pulses from the gas giant. These gravitational forces destabilized the asteroid, leading to its eventual break-up.
Phases of the Asteroid Debris Migration
The dispersal of the resulting debris occurred in two distinct phases, which extended the duration of the bombardment across the inner solar system. This caused a rapid spike in meteor activity on Earth, the Moon, and Mars.
The remaining 25 percent of the debris migrated toward the resonance zone more gradually, taking between 100 and 150 million years. This secondary phase was driven by the Yarkovsky effect, a phenomenon where the uneven absorption and emission of solar heat by an asteroid’s surface creates a weak reactive impulse, slowly nudging the object’s trajectory.
Evidence from the Moon and Earth
Because Earth’s surface is constantly reshaped by tectonic activity, volcanism, and erosion, the geological record for events older than 650 million years is largely erased. Scientists instead turn to the Moon, which acts as a stable archive for such ancient impacts.
Analysis of lunar craters and samples of impact glass—originally collected during the Apollo missions—corroborates a surge in large asteroid impacts occurring 800 million years ago.
Consequences for Planetary Development
The timing of this bombardment coincides with significant shifts in the history of the inner planets. On Earth, the peak of the asteroid impact period aligns with a time of global cooling and substantial changes in the planet’s biosphere. Meanwhile, on Mars, researchers have linked these impacts to the generation of powerful seismic waves and a marked increase in volcanic activity.
