Pro-Iranian regime protesters stormed the U.S. Consulate in Karachi, Pakistan, on Sunday, setting fire to the guardhouse and breaching security barricades amid unrest following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Pakistani troops opened fire on crowds, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries, including to U.S. embassy staff.
Protests Erupt After Khamenei’s Death
Tensions escalated in Karachi as protesters stormed the U.S. Consulate entrance. Eyewitnesses reported Pakistani security forces, including troops, firing to control the unrest. Initial reports indicate eight protesters have been killed and three U.S. embassy staff injured.
Muhammad Amin, a spokesman for the Edhi Foundation rescue service, stated that at least eight bodies were transported to Karachi’s civil hospitals, with 20 others injured, many with bullet wounds.
Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has ordered security forces to maintain strict control of the area.
Regional Escalation Following US-Israel Strikes
The protests in Karachi followed a large-scale U.S. and Israeli strike on Iran that reportedly killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 86, along with senior officials including Ali Shamkhani and General Mohammad Pakpour.
Retaliatory missile attacks were reported across the Middle East, impacting Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Manama, and Tel Aviv. Iranian state media confirmed Khamenei’s death, calling it a pivotal moment in Iran’s history.
Ali Larijani, head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, stated, “The brave soldiers and the great nation of Iran will teach an unforgettable lesson to the international oppressors.”
While celebrations occurred in parts of Tehran, mourners in Enghlab Square chanted, “Death to America.”
Casualties and Closures
The strikes have resulted in casualties beyond Iran. Two people were killed in Abu Dhabi, and four were injured in Dubai’s Palm area. In Israel, one woman died near Tel Aviv, with around 20 others wounded. Tehran responded by closing the Strait of Hormuz, though enforcement remains unclear.
Airspaces across Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Syria, the UAE, and Israel have been closed to civilian flights, leading to widespread airline cancellations.
Unprecedented Operation and Calls for Regime Change
The U.S.-Israel operation in Iran is described as unprecedented, targeting 27 U.S. bases and Israeli military facilities. Israeli army chief Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir said the operation is “taking place at a completely different scale” than previous engagements.
U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized the campaign will continue until regime change in Tehran, stating, “This is the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their Country,” and warning of further force if Iran retaliates.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu added, “This is your time to join forces, to overthrow the regime and to secure your future.”
