A 39-year-old man was found dead in his home in Tafelsig, South Africa on Sunday evening, prompting a murder investigation. The discovery has left the community and the victim’s family reeling.
Sharief Daniels Found Dead in Tafelsig Home
Sharief Daniels was discovered deceased at 9:45 p.m. on Sunday in a hokkie – a small, informal dwelling – located at the back of a family member’s property on Suurberg Street. He had been missing since Friday evening, according to a close relative.
The relative stated Daniels was last seen after going to ask a family member for money for electricity. He purchased electricity and returned home, and that was the last time he was seen alive.
A search was conducted on Saturday evening, but the hokkie was found in disarray. Just before a missing person’s poster was to be distributed, family members received the news of his death.
“The smell was so heavy, so one family member went to look again and took a torch, and that’s when they saw his feet hanging out there by the bed,” the relative said.
Police have not yet determined the cause of death, pending an autopsy. However, the relative described a disturbing scene, noting Daniels was partially unclothed and there was significant blood at the scene. Another police source suggested the possibility that Daniels was killed by being sat upon with a pillow placed over his head.
The incident is believed to have occurred between Friday evening and Saturday morning. Daniels’ phone and boom box are also missing, along with his bicycle, which police believe may be connected to the investigation.
Despite struggling with drug addiction, Daniels was described as a friendly and private individual. Family members suspect he was either killed in his sleep or by multiple people.
Mitchells Plain police have registered a murder case. Captain FC van Wyk stated that Daniels had “multiple blue marks on his body and on his back.” Medical personnel at the scene declared him deceased.
