Iran’s Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh has emphasized Africa’s importance to Iran’s foreign and security strategy, signaling an intent to strengthen ties with nations in the region, particularly in West Africa. The discussions took place during talks in Tehran, highlighting a growing engagement in Africa’s security landscape.

Expanding Strategic Relations in West Africa

According to Mehr News Agency, Nasirzadeh stated that Tehran aims to expand strategic relations with sovereign states in West Africa, with a specific focus on Burkina Faso for closer cooperation. He also commended Ouagadougou for its stance against actions deemed hostile towards Iran.

Nasirzadeh characterized recent political shifts in the Sahel region as grassroots responses to colonial-era pressures, noting increased coordination among Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. He described the formation of the Alliance of Sahel States as a significant step towards resisting external pressure and achieving greater strategic autonomy, reiterating Tehran’s support for nations seeking to protect their sovereignty.

Burkina Faso Expresses Solidarity with Iran

Burkina Faso’s Minister of State for Defence, Célestin Simporé, expressed solidarity with the Iranian people and praised the country’s resilience. He stated, “We believe the world can achieve complete peace if relations based on domination are broken and more space is given to justice and peace.”

Analysts suggest this outreach reflects Tehran’s broader effort to build alliances beyond its traditional sphere of influence, while African states are seeking diversified security partnerships. The meeting underscores Iran’s growing engagement in Africa’s security landscape amid intensifying geopolitical competition in the Sahel.
