Kinahan Chats: Inside the €50m Lyons Clan Costa del Sol Bust

Spanish authorities have dismantled the Spanish operations of the Glasgow-based Lyons clan following a coordinated international effort known as “Operation Armorum.” The crackdown effectively decapitated the syndicate’s presence on the Costa del Sol, resulting in 14 arrests and the raiding of 18 properties across Malaga province.

  • Financial Impact: Approximately €50 million in illicit cash laundered into Spanish assets.
  • Key Arrests: 14 members in custody, including leader Steven Lyons.
  • Operational Reach: 18 properties raided throughout the Malaga province.

The Financial Infrastructure of the Lyons Clan

For decades, the syndicate transitioned from street-level violence in Scotland to managing a sophisticated international laundering hub in Spain. This expansion was facilitated by Johnny Morrissey, a Manchester-born “banker” who allegedly laundered millions under the guise of a Vodka brand.

Through Morrissey, the Lyons clan shared a financial infrastructure with the Kinahan cartel. This connection eventually linked the group to the Kinahans, who are currently fugitives sought by the United States.

The Guardia Civil’s elite Central Operative Unit (UCO) uncovered the extent of these operations after decrypting EncroChat and SkyECC mobile phone servers. These records provided a “ledger of the underworld,” revealing how the clan pumped an estimated €50 million into luxury real estate, car rental firms, and Spanish golf complexes.

Operation Armorum and the Fall of the Syndicate

The organization’s attempts to maintain a low profile ended in May 2025. During the Champions League final between PSG and Inter Milan, a hooded assassin murdered Eddie Lyons Jr. and associate Ross Monaghan at a bar in Fuengirola.

The public nature of the execution accelerated the UCO’s timeline. The organization’s leader, Steven Lyons, fled from his Marbella villa to Dubai and eventually to Bali.

In a coordinated effort involving Interpol and authorities in the UAE and Indonesia, the net closed. Steven Lyons was intercepted at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, while his partner was detained in Dubai.
