Kiwi social media stars Thomas and Sheena Southam have sold their Northland home for $890,000, enabling them to relocate their YouTube show, Chasing a Plate, to Melbourne, Australia.

Sale After Year on the Market

The Southams’ three-bedroom home in Cable Bay sold after being on the market for a year and undergoing several price reductions. The sale will allow them to move to Melbourne and continue producing their food-focused YouTube content.

“We had a lovely couple who came through. They absolutely adored the view and the house and the way it was set up. We’re really lucky,” Sheena Southam told OneRoof, noting the buyers were fans of the kitchen.

The couple plans to travel to Indonesia for a short trip before flying to Melbourne in mid-January. Thomas Southam noted Melbourne’s diverse culinary scene, particularly in its western suburbs, with strong Vietnamese and African influences.

Chasing a Plate Moves to Australia

The Southams launched Chasing a Plate in 2016 as a way to fund and document their global food travels. They returned to New Zealand and built their Cable Bay home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

While they enjoyed living near the beach, Sheena Southam said, “We’ve loved having fishing, boating and beaches on our doorstep, but it’s time to head to the city again.” They had hoped to keep the property as a vacation home but found it financially unfeasible.

The home initially listed for $969,000 before selling for its registered valuation of $890,000 in November. Listing agent Joel Vieviorka said properties in the higher price range in Cable Bay typically take longer to sell and often fetch less than their valuation.
