Kompany faces lengthy Bayern Munich recovery timeline

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital after collapsing while watching the club’s reserve team train. The 40-year-old manager had been battling a severe viral infection that kept him away from pre-match media duties earlier in the week, bbc.com reported.

German journalist Taufiq Khalil described the frantic scene to the BBC, noting that a rescue helicopter landed at the Bayern Munich training ground before Kompany was ultimately transported by ambulance. Medical staff immediately admitted the former Manchester City captain for inpatient treatment and detailed examinations.

Max Eberl Confirms Stable Condition and Extended Absence

Speaking at a Saturday press conference ahead of Sunday’s Bundesliga fixture against SC Freiburg, Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl delivered an update on the manager’s health.

Eberl added insight into the timeline for the manager’s return, emphasizing that the club would not rush the process. Vinnie will be given all the time he needs, Eberl stated, according to The Guardian. We’re not going to start setting any timeframes. We need to find out what the issue is, and then it’s a question of what the recovery time will be. We’re not talking in terms of days, but weeks. We’re all clear on that.

Pushing Through Illness Ahead of Arsenal Clash

Kompany missed his pre-match news conference on Tuesday ahead of Bayern’s Champions League match against Arsenal due to a virus. Despite the illness, he managed to stand on the touchline during Wednesday’s 2-2 draw at home in heavy rain.

Reflecting on that decision after the Arsenal match, Kompany admitted he ignored clear warning signs from his body. I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course I didn’t listen to my body – and then at some point my body just said: ‘Enough is enough!’ he said, as reported by The Guardian.

Eberl questioned whether the club should have intervened sooner. If a coach says he feels ready to do something, then we’re not going to say ‘we won’t allow that’ if we don’t know what’s going on. It’s also everyone’s own responsibility to say, ‘I can’t carry on now’. Vinnie’s a hard worker. If you don’t listen to the subtle signals your body sends, eventually it will scream out in pain.

Aaron Danks Takes Charge for Freiburg Match

With Kompany sidelined, English assistant coach Aaron Danks will lead the team for Sunday’s away match at Freiburg. Danks confirmed he spoke briefly with Kompany on Friday but kept the conversation strictly away from tactics. I explained to him that we would be having no football conversations, Danks said, according to bbc.com. It was just checking in on his health and making sure he’s OK.

Danks also emphasized the unity of the backroom staff. All the football operations are in our hands and we’ll work together as a team to keep the club moving forward, he added. Alongside Kompany’s absence, Bayern will also travel without Germany captain Joshua Kimmich, who remains on bereavement leave.

Former clubs have rallied around the Bayern boss, with Manchester City posting a message on social media wishing a speedy recovery to their former captain and 11-year veteran, who won four Premier League titles during his playing days. Bayern currently sits atop the Bundesliga table and faces a Champions League fixture away against Atlético Madrid on November 3, 2026.
