Jimmy Lai, the 78-year-old pro-democracy media tycoon, was sentenced to 20 years in prison by a Hong Kong court, a punishment his son called devastating but expected. The founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily newspaper was found guilty in December of foreign collusion and seditious publication under a sweeping national security law imposed by China.
Jimmy Lai Sentencing Draws International Condemnation
The United Nations and the European Union have led international criticism of the sentencing. Countries including the United States, Britain, and Australia have also voiced opposition, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio calling the sentence “unjust and tragic.” The EU called for Lai’s “immediate and unconditional release,” and Britain vowed further engagement on the case.
Lai’s son, Sebastian Lai, said his father smiled at the judges during sentencing, a sign of defiance. “They may have his body but not his spirit,” he said, adding that his father has been in solitary confinement for the past five years.
Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Sebastian Lai explained that he cannot return to Hong Kong due to his criticism of the government. He expressed worry about his father’s health, noting his age and the conditions of his imprisonment. “It’s almost a miracle that he’s still so strong in spirit and in faith,” he said.
Lai has been in jail since 2020, and his case is widely seen as an example of eroding political freedoms under the national security law, which Beijing imposed in 2020 following pro-democracy protests.
China Defends Sentence
Beijing has rejected the global rebukes, lodging “solemn representations” with countries that condemned the 20-year sentence. A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman stated that certain countries were using the case to “maliciously smear Hong Kong.”
Sebastian Lai said he will continue to campaign for his father’s release and hopes Ireland will join other nations in calling for his freedom.
