An Indonesian legislator is calling for a full investigation into a daycare violence scandal in Yogyakarta, where reports indicate hundreds of children were victimized, including 53 who suffered physical abuse.
- Hundreds of children victimized; 53 suffered physical abuse.
- Call for maximum penalties under Indonesia’s Child Protection Law (Law No. 35/2014).
- Demand for a national audit of all daycare centers covering legality and caregiver competence.
Systemic Failures in Child Protection
Selly Andriany Gantina, a member of Commission VIII of the House of Representatives, stated that the case exposes systemic failures in child supervision and protection within formal care institutions.
Gantina described the situation as a “serious humanitarian tragedy,” noting that the violence likely persisted over a long period due to negligence across multiple supervisory bodies.
Demands for Accountability and Oversight
Quoting House Speaker Puan Maharani, Gantina stressed that perpetrators must face the maximum penalties under Indonesia’s Child Protection Law (Law No. 35/2014), with no exceptions.
The lawmaker criticized existing weaknesses in daycare licensing and oversight, warning against the commercialization of childcare without adequate safeguards.
To prevent future occurrences, Gantina urged a national audit of all daycare centers to evaluate operational standards, legality, and the competence of caregivers.
Call for Support and Regulation
Gantina called upon the National Commission for Child Protection, local governments, and relevant ministries to provide comprehensive psychosocial support for the victims and their families.
She emphasized that children are the most vulnerable group and must be fully protected by the state, communities, and families.
The legislator added that the incident should serve as a turning point for Indonesia to implement firm regulation and active government monitoring rather than leaving child protection to market forces.
